THE GRuB FARMHOUSE

5-Star Built Green

The GRuB Farmhouse is a community-supported construction project. The non-profit GRuB organization, "Garden-Raised Bounty", provides services to youth-at-risk and low-income families of Thurston and Mason Counties, in Washington State.

The GRuB Farmhouse has a concrete radiant heat, slab-on-grade, a "FasWall" recycled content ICF wall system with a hand-troweled  stucco exterior, and plaster interior surfaces. The second story design incorporates advanced framing and air tight drywall construction, blown-in insulation with a one inch rigid insulation layer over the plywood, and a rain screen system that supports the fiber cement siding products.  The roof is a metal standing-seam design.  The interior air quality is managed by a heat recovery ventilator.  Materials were selected for their green characteristics of being reclaimed, sustainably harvested, low VOC, regionally  made, containing recycled content, or having Energy Star or Built Green specifications.

The project was managed and completed through the generous contributions of time, energy, and money from GRuB staff, volunteers and supporters, Polar Bear Construction staff, suppliers, and subcontractors, and City of Olympia and Thurston County government agencies.
